More on Dr. Palabyab versus the RH Bill

(For the record, not even I would say that the RH bill -- which I passionately oppose -- makes contraception an essential component of marriage. - CAP.)

From CBCP for Life:

MANILA, July 26, 2011–At the July 25 State of the Soul of the Nation Address (SSONA) organized by the interfaith Pro-Life Coalition, one of the speakers, Dr. Eleanor Palabyab, touched on the widespread use of contraception and how a landmark papal letter had predicted its consequences on marriage, families, and on societies worldwide.

Palabyab, the president of the group Doctors for Life, appealed to President Benigno Simeon Aquino III to reject measures that will end up destroying the institutions of marriage and the family, particularly the heavily opposed Reproductive Health (RH) bill.

“Aming dalangin na huwag sana siyang maligaw,” the doctor said. “Malaki ang pressure na dumarating sa kanya galing sa mga nagbibigay o nangangakong magbigay ng tulong sa pamahalaan. Subalit sana lagi niyang alalahanin ang santong sulat–’Anong mapapala ninuman kung mapasakanya ang buong mundo ngunit mawala naman ang kanyang kaluluwa?’

“Kaya kami nananalangin na tatanggihan at tutulan niya ang population control cum reproductive health bill,” Palabyab said.

She pointed out the special significance of the day for Christians and for others who respected the value of human life, it being the 43rd anniversary of Pope Paul VI’s encyclical Humanae Vitae (“On Human Life”), which clarified the teachings of the Catholic Church on married love and regulation of birth.

The late pontiff also predicted the ruin that would befall families and the whole world if the natural law on married love, chastity and human sexuality in general were to be defied.

The widespread use of contraception, he said, would “lead to conjugal infidelity and the general lowering of morality.”

“He also said that because of contraception ‘the man’ would lose respect for the woman and ‘no longer (care) for her physical and psychological equilibrium’ and would come to ‘the point of considering her as a mere instrument of selfish enjoyment, and no longer as a respected and beloved companion,’” Palabyab stated.

“He also said that the widespread use of contraception would place ‘a dangerous weapon…in the hands of those public authorities who take no heed of moral exigencies.’”

Another warning the late pope wrote about in his 1968 encyclical was that widespread contraceptive use would lead man to think that he had limitless dominion over his own body.

“All these prophecies have been fulfilled,” Palabyab pointed out. “And the result has been the destruction of the family in countless homes around the world, the reduction of women into purely sexual objects, and the attempt of public authorities, as evidenced by the present RH bill, to stamp the boot of the totalitarian state upon the face of every family and every marriage.”

From the Cory C. Aquino Kalayaan Hall of Club Filipino, where the SSONA was held with some 2,500 people in attendance, Palabyab made an appeal to the current president:

“We call on President Aquino, his Cabinet and his political allies to join us in celebrating the 43rd anniversary of these great prophecies by committing to junk the RH bill.”

“If the purpose of the bill is to guarantee the right of women to contraception and sterilization, its proponents should know there is no need for it at all. First of all, there is no law that prohibits contraception or sterilization. Everyone is free to do it,” she stated.

“The real purpose of the bill is to require all couples to make contraception and sterilization an essential component of marriage, and to make the State the provider of contraception and sterilization.”

“Aming dalangin na maging malinaw sana sa ating Pangulo ang kanyang tungkulin na ipagtanggol ang buong katotohanan tungkol sa kabanalan ng pamilya, pag-aasawa at buhay,” the doctor said.

The SSONA took place several hours before the President was to deliver his 2011 State of the Nation Address. The Club Filipino event drew together members of socio-civic organizations, faith-based groups, and the youth sector, as well as family and life advocates. (CBCP for Life)
